India vs South Africa 3rd test

PLAYER OF THE MATCH

That's all we have for you. Here's Sid Monga's report for those who want to bask in a great day of Indian cricket. Ranking up there with Leeds 2002 or Perth 2008 or Lords 2014 (those are the ones I can remember) Equally, if not more important to note is the fact that South Africa have won the series, looking a class apart in Cape Town, and adapting to a weird wicket well in Centurion. The 13 723 people who came to the Wanderers today will certainly be happy about that. Thanks for you lot here, making ball-by-ball ever so much fun. But now we have to part ways. Remember me though. This is Al Muthu craving attention.
Faf du Plessis comes up, to collect the awards for winning the series. "I thikn India outplayed us in this Test. We didn't take our chances. We were just sloppy. From a bowling poiint of view, we weren't consistent. Our fielding was pretty average. And with the bat, it was tough conditions. We were surprised how well the pitch played this morning, Hashim and Dean great partnership. But the history of this wicket tells you the ball does a bit more late in the day. We can only blame ourselves. Extremely happy to win the series. But if you told me 2-1 before this series, I would've bitten the hand off. India have played great wicket, but we were deserved winnings. Lot of one-day cricket against a very strong Indian team, and then Australia, and we will take confidence into there
Vernon Philander is Man of the Series, playing his 50th Test. "Sorry we couldn't win this one, but happy with my performances. Able to stand up with the bat in crucial situations. We'd have loved to pull this one off too, was my 50th Test, but India played better. Will give the body a break for a week, and then start preparing for the Australia Tests

.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is Man of the Match for his all-round performance"Very happy. Whenever I get the chance, I try to do well and it came good at the right moment. I always enjoy batting, when it comes to Tests. It wasn't an easy wicket but I wanted to stay there as long as possible and luckily runs came too. It was an amazing track to bowl on, there were a few awkward balls, but overall it was good."
5.25 pm Here's Virat Kohli: "Lovely. We required some character playing on a pitch that was very difficult. I think our guys showed great guts throug hthe four days. We took the challenge. Batting first wasn't a call that went down well with some people, but we knew it was the right call. We knew we were close in the first two games. This was perfect. Elgar and Amla played really well, although it was not easy. You expect that from South Africa. But one thing I know is that when wickets go down, in pressure situations, its very difficult to come back. And the other good thing was we didn't leak runs. The bowlers are a big positive. Sixty wickets in a series is rare, and if the batsmen step up, they understand they need to and they did in this game and the win feels really great. Need bowlers confident to win Tests and as batsmen, we need to think about our game, prepare better and I'm sure we can win more often away from home.

5.15 pm An angry Kohli takes a bow, a signal of pure irony. He has played two spectacular innings on a pitch that held a special grudge for the batsmen. He was unhappy in Centurion, at his team-mates, at match-officials, at basically everything because the series was gone. But India arrived in Johannesburg. They got their selections right. They made the right call at the toss, and at the time many doubted it. Why would a team stack themselves with five bowlers and bat on a green pitch? Well this is why? India knew it would become terrible for batting in the last innings. And it did. South Africa were 124 for 1 and looked favourites to win until as late as 20 minutes before tea. Then they end up 177 all out. This will go down as one of India's most famous victories. The pitch was against them. They faced down a scary bowling attack. Bested the pitch. And found a way to prevent a whitewash.
But Poor Dean Elgar. He carries his bat for his troubles, but that would be little consolation. It was a high-quality innings, full of courage and unreal application. It's a shame very few of his team-mates could support him.
Cricket's done, but there's plenty of football to come today, with Real Madrid taking on Valencia, PSG hosting Montpellier and Liverpool facing West Brom in the FA Cup. You can watch all those games here.
Ravish: "WE WANT ONE MORE TEST! "
Rudra Varma: "That is undoubtedly India's one of the best ever test wins home or away. Absolute grit, determination and courage shown by the batsmen. Given the treacherous pitch, both India and SA batsmen showed tremendous courage. Riveting !!! With the right (and sensible) team selection, India might have even won the series. Remember, first 2 tests were competed evenly for most of the time. what a wonderful series. Test cricket at its best "
Ebin: "The best test match ive ever seen . Even the Ashes wasnt this good. Outstanding cricket .Kudos to both teams."
Suramya: "Barring Three bad periods of play and bizarre selection calls before this test.. this could have been an entirely different scoreline.. also, SA and elgar should be very proud of their display"
Rushi: "I would go with Kohli as the MoM. It was a tough pitch to bat on and that was the difference. Amla was good too, but Kohli may edge out"

India vs South Africa 2nd test

PLAYER OF THE MATCH

12:45pm A match that was attritional for the longest time has ended in a quick collapse. No doubt anymore about which session was series-defining. We hope you enjoyed our coverage of this game, it was a pleasure having you. Be sure to check out all the post-match content we have lined up, including match highlights. On behalf of Karthik, Raghav, Firdose and Monga - it's a goodbye from me.
Lungi Ngidi: At the moment it hasn't sunk in, I'm chaffed and very happy. It's been quick turnaround for me. There's been some good form in franchise cricket. When I got the call out I felt I was in good form. Luckily enough, it [the debut] was on my home ground. The support was great. [Stuck] to the basics you know. The odd one that nipped back was getting the wickets. Definitely wasn't the fastest SuperSport pitch but we had to make do with what we were given. We pretty much put them under pressure.
Lungi Ngidi is the Man of the Match
Faf du Plessis post-match reaction (Indian subcontinent and UAE only)
Faf du Plessis: It took a lot of work. I thought we were on top most of the time. Especially in the field, we did well. Our main focus after day one was to show character. We were very disappointed after the last 45 minutes on day one. Our chat was that we needed to show more character. We were a little bit short in the first innings. We needed to get 400 after the position we were in. But for me the vital part was in the second innings when we kept pushing what they needed to get. We knew anything above 250 would be tough and that's why our batsmen grinded. We're looking forward to Ngidi and KG leading this attack in a few years. [Better catch] Morne definitely! He's going to tell us about that catch over the next few days.
Virat Kohli post-match reaction (Indian subcontinent and UAE only)
Virat Kohli: We thought the wicket was really flat. It was surprising. We though we have our best chance to put runs on the board. Especially after the way SA ended the first innings, we had the momentum. We should have got the lead. It's the batsmen who have let the team down again. The thinking it very simple, I wanna leave everything on the field. The 150 means nothing now that we've lost the series. Having not won the game, personal milestones do not matter at all. You go out there and you give your best shot. We tried our best and we just weren't good enough. They were better than us, especially with the fielding.
Ngidi gets Bumrah's wicket and hands South Africa the series (Indian subcontinent and UAE only)
12:30pm Bringing you the presentation shortly...
Avneet: "AB! My Man of the Match. Was robbed of one in the first test on a bowlers paradise. This time, he should be getting it for game changing 80 and amazing runout of pujara, alongwith the catching brilliance. "

Siraj Shaikh: "Splendid performance by Ngidi.. india undone with his fast bowling. He's single-handedly responsible for India's collapse. Hence my MAN OF THE MATCH!"

Sagar: "First, SAf deserves to be the winner, no denying that. The loss wouldn't have been as heartbreaking if India did not self-destruct as much as they did (thinking about all the dropped catches and the three run-outs)"

Ravish Chandel: "On tough wickets, if lower order can add runs, why can't the top order??? Is it like that after penetrating through top order, fielding side turns casual OR the lower order plays with less fear OR top order - in order to show more intent - tend to forget the very basic rules of batting? OR whatt??? I can't understand "

Farhan Khan: "what a win by South Africa!!! So many great moment. Century of Kholi & 6 wickets of Nigidi. Without Styen, South Africa done a Brilliant Job. Well Done... #SAvsIND "

Satyam: "Gutted as an Indian fan. This team had everything to win in South Africa. To add to that, they had a pitch they could take advantage off. But some selection blunders and fielding mishaps have caused a crushing defeat.

Thys: "Ngidi joins a impressive list of South African bowlers that have taken 5 wicket hauls on debut. List includes Philander, Langeveldt, Abbott, De Lange and Klusener" --- Correct. And he's the 25th South African to do it.

12:18pm, Day 5 A crushing defeat for India, by 135 runs. Undone completely by South Africa's bowlers in the second innings. They gifted a few wickets over the course of this matcha s well - Pujara gave them both his wickets, Pandya threw it away in the first. Hardly any resistance from India's batsmen, other than a top-class 153 from Kohli. South Africa managed to climb out of trouble with the bat. They were always going to be difficult with the ball. 2-0 is a fair reflection. Markram, Amla, Elgar, AB complemented Morkel's four in the first innings and Ngidi's six in the second, to set up the foundation for this big win.

5.15pm Despite the entire third day getting washed out, South Africa go 1-0 up with more than a day to spare. What a cracking day of Test cricket - 18 wickets tumbled in 64 overs. Hope you enjoyed our coverage as much as we did bringing it to you. Thanks for tuning in. I will leave you with Al Muthu's report. Goodbye and good night for now.

Whizzbang: ""They were a bowler short but they pitched the balls in the right areas and bowled their hearts out" That says it all. Protea Fire. You can't extinguish it!"
Kung Fu Pandya: "India in the next Test should go in with Rahane and KL Rahul. KL and Vijay are more solid and Rahane has shown he can make runs in overseas conditions. Kohli I think is fine despite making low scores overseas. He was looking fluent for his 28 and is not far from making a significant score."
VISWAGOPAL: "First innings AB's knock makes the difference to this game. Both the side's second innings pretty much same score. Well played by both the teams"
Vedhas: "Hoping for a better selection from Team India for starters. Fielding the best team is a good way to start winning matches. KL Rahul and Jinks are definitely better than the guys occupying their posts. "
Adarsh: "There would be a lot of talk on Indian batting deficiencies, but I feel that the biggest difference has been the quality of slip catching. The drop of Maharaj cost India 35 runs directly. And I see no way in which any other team could catch the blinders SA slips pulled off diving forward in the second innings."
Presentation
Virat Kohli: Well in hindsight, we lost by 70-odd, if we had taken chances in the first innings, they would have been 220. Losing wickets in bunches we have to plug in. We were in the game for the three days and it was a wonderful match to be part of. We would have taken that if someone told 208 would be the target. It was a great effort but we needed someone to get a 75 or 80. 20 or 30 is not enough. They were a bowler short but they pitched the balls in the right areas and bowled their hearts out. We need to rectify our mistakes also. Batting, as I said, we need to think about stringing partnerships. This game is all about partnerships, and crucial runs, and they did better. The bowlers learnt pretty quickly and did well in the second innings. We are still feeling good about how we went about this Test match. The mindset really matters when you travel away from home. You need to positive in defence and leaving, and cash in on scoring. We believe in Pandya, he always wants to do well, even away from home. He showed a lot of character and the knock was brilliant
Faf du Plessis: Every single time in this Test, we had to stand up in tough periods. The way we responded was brilliant. Even with them getting to a decent start, we stuck to our guns. The first morning we expected it to move around, but quite a bit of damage was done in the first hour. I thought 270 was par, Pandya then took risks and it came off. Once again, the bowlers stepped up. The plan was to try and get 200 runs and have a lead of 350 and have a crack at them. We were surprised how much the ball was doing. It was like a day one pitch. Green, again. It was a good pitch, though, and there was a good challenge between the bat and ball. It is really important to put the opposition under pressure in a three-match series. Dale would have been a real handful. We feel sorry for him and wish him a speedy recovery. And thanks to the great crowd over the three days.
Vernon Philander, Man of the Match: Coming to Newlands, it is generally slow, but they caught us off guard in the first morning. It was a wonderful effort with the bat from us in the first innings. What better crowd, what better conditions you can ask for! I think the ways the boys went about is was special. We were one seamer down but KG and Morne also bowled pretty well. I have been coming back after the break, so I felt a little stiff. Look, Dale has been one hell of a champion, one hell of a leader. Hopefully, he is back as soon as possible.

South Africa did not have Steyn - down with a heel injury in the fourth innings - but Philander stepped up with career-best figures to lead the hosts to 1-0. He waves to the crowd and soaks in the applause. He kept nagging away outside off and found sharp movement from a Newlands pitch, which threw up several unplayable deliveries. He first had Vijay nicking off and then worked his way through the middle and lower order. Morne Morkel wasn't as threatening with the new ball but soon hit rhythm and bounced out Dhawan and Pujara.
India seemed to have a good chance in the 208 chase when Kohli was batting fluently but then Philander returned to pin the India captain with an inswinger. He was so confident that he did not spin around to appeal and kept running away in celebration. There was no stopping him today.
Robin Sharma : "When your number 8 and 9 batsmen face more deliveries (94) and score 50 runs as compared 65 balls faced by Top 3 batsmen for just 33 runs, how can any team win a match like this. Poor batting "
Lakshman Kumar: "This is the second time that SA lost Steyn in the middle of a Test match due to an injury and the remaining bowlers stood up and won them the match..! They did it against the Aussies and now with India..! Great crop of fast bowlers..!"
